“Sometimes all it takes is a tiny shift of perspective to see something familiar in a totally new light.”Dan Brown
Are you looking for a fresh perspective for your organization when it comes to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging? My approach is simple and created off principals I have used in my 20+ year fire service career.
First, I learn about your organization by listening, observing, and spending time with all levels from the bottom to the top. When a building is on fire, it is critial that a 360 in preformed to ensure the incident commander has a comprehensive picture of what is going on and identify potential hazards.
Second, I meet with the changemakers and leadership team to share and discuss my findings. We work together to create a plan based on organizational priorities. This is called an incident action plan, the incident commander creates the overall strategy to mitigate the situation.
Third, we create the tasks to meet the strategy. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are received best when there is a culture of curisoity not mandates. This is a more thoughtful approach to ensure sustainable change. This is when we mitigate the emergency or put the fire out.
Finally, we evaluate to see if the strategy is working, and we ensure there are no hot spots or concerns. This is the overhaul part of a structure fire, to perserve whats left and learn from the incident to prevent future fires.
